My moon with Rowan

Continuing the spiral wheel of my personal Lunar Tree Calendar, last moon we transitioned from the Birch tree on to Rowan – the tree of psychic protection and intuition.

During this Rowan Moon I continued to build on the new tree relationships I have been forming since our move here nearly four years ago now.

As I mentioned in my previous post; in my work with the trees, they have presented themselves to me through their links to the elements, and as I have been walking my personal lifetime pilgrimage with them, they have shared their elemental strengths with me offering a unique perspective on their physical and spiritual properties.

In this system the Rowan is one of the Air and Wind Element Trees, having Air and the Wind as its dominant element; its secondary element is Fire.

Once again, I am very lucky to have several Rowan trees in the garden here. One stands on a bank right outside the window of the room I use as an office, and she leans out across the roof of the workshop where I craft all my magical wood creations and birth my ceremonial tools and drums.

Dotted around the garden are several others of differing ages, some are draped in lichen all year round and yet manage to be smothered in rich red berries in the Autumn; others younger and spindlier – are yet to grow into maturity.

So, this moon I decided to do most of my work with the trees right on my doorstep, particularly the one by my workshop. Although I did also visit some others further afield, that I found last year on whilst out wandering and wondering in the local landscape.

My guardian Rowan at home

As I spent time here over the moon sitting with this lovely tree, I soon began to realise that her delightfully feminine exterior disguised a deep and powerful heart, full of strength and tenacity; and she exuded a highly protective energy. Little did I know that I would be calling on that energy before long!

In the past I have mainly worked with Rowan to support my intuition and to strengthen my psychic muscles. She has offered me many insights over the years – it was the Rowan tree that first clarified the Tree Note Frequencies for me. As I sat with a Rowan in Scotland some years ago, she showed me the same ‘numbers’ that a Rowan on Exmoor had been showing me for weeks before, and through my connection to and conversations with that Scottish Rowan tree, I came to realise that those numbers represented a kind of global baseline energy for the Rowan dryad.

This moon it was so much more about her protecting me and taking me deep into my heart over and over.

She has guided me into flight this moon, lifting me up, to rise above difficult situations, to honour the heart centred space from which I operate, whilst helping me to see the bigger picture, allowing me to navigate challenges more gracefully and from a place of compassion. She has stood me in my truth and held me there, reminding me to continue to dance to the beat of my own drum, even when the world around me is beating its own rhythm loud and fast!

The Rowan has held me this moon in a powerful circle of protection. She has reminded me to be constant, to return to a place of heart centred strength, to work with the element of fire for transformation – remembering that fire needs oxygen to live and so to feed that fire with air.

This moon, the release and renewal that began with the Birch tree continues but with a very different flavour and energy, more movement into the outer world, more preparation for the year to come. The softly glowing embers of the winter fire have been blown into life by Rowan’s energy, and I give her my heart felt gratitude for the gifts of her medicine blessings and her loving protective embrace.

(thanks to Michael Roberts for the stunning image at the top of this article of a flying Rowan)
