This unique Shamanic Reindeer Drum was birthed in Ceremony on The Hazel New Moon in Vigo on the 3rd September 2024.

Creamy Reindeer Hide laced on a beeswaxed 14″ Birch frame and a plum leather bound ring.

Finished with a plum leather wrapped Bridget’s cross handle inset with a stunning Dragons Blood Jasper cabochon as the heart stone.

This drum comes with a matching plum leather song caller, birthed together with the drum, this is stuffed with wool from our own ‘pet’ sheep and is bound onto a hand polished Hazel Wood handle gathered from an Ancient Hazel copse on the West Coast of Scotland.

The drum comes with a small matching medicine pouch, with a Hazel Wood Totem, which contains personally gathered natural sacred items representative of the four elements of earth, air, fire and water and also includes a hand picked crystal as a gift for you, and your drum. As your connection to drum evolves these unique pouches can be filled with personal items which can be changed in and out dependent on the work you are undertaking together with your drum

The Reindeer carries a powerful matriarchal energy, immensely resilient and powerful and yet is a gentle spirit and a great healer. Here in these Northern lands, the Reindeer is sometimes associated with the Goddess Elen. In Mongolia Reindeer feature prominently on ancient megaliths carved with symbols. Little is known about their meaning or function; these “deer stones” take their name from the stylised depictions of flying deer carved into the stone. Reindeer as a totem animal symbolises protection, wisdom, resourcefulness, knowledge, connection, creativity and inventiveness. The Reindeer spirit will spiral us deep into otherworld journeys carrying us on its flying hoofbeats.

Birch trees are considered pioneer species, rapidly colonising land that has been levelled by fire or clear-cutting. They sprout fresh green leaves in early Spring, just as the first thaw begins. Hence, this tree’s long held association with fertility and new beginnings. It also carries powerful energies for clearing, cleansing and purification.The spirit of Birch offers courage and protection to those who would venture outside of the safe and the normal; through its sheltering of for the psychoactive Fly Agaric mushrooms Birch can be a powerful protector as we journey in the other realms.

Hazel has fast-moving quicksilver like energy, it is associated with the element of air, (although it has also very strong affinity with water) and the planet of MercuryIn Celtic folklore the Hazel tree is considered the tree of knowledge, of intuition and poetic inspiration, particularly in Ireland were its nuts are a symbol of great mystical wisdom. Hazel wood is the last of the nine traditional firewoods that are part of the Belfire that the Druid’s burned at Beltane – it was added to the fire to gain wisdom. Hazel is often associated with sacred springs and wells and also with salmon.

Dragon Blood is a deep green and red form of jasper. It is a stone that helps us tap into a well of courage and fortitude from a heart centred place. A strengthener of the physical and etheric bodies, Dragon’s Blood works very well for knitting the two of them together, when illness or other negative conditions have brought our vitality down. Emotionally, Dragon’s Blood helps develop self-confidence, a stronger will, an open expression of feeling and affection, a willingness to help others for the greater good, and the persistence required to make real and effective change for ourselves and the world around us.

The New Moon, is a deeply mystical time of the month when the external world recedes, and our energy is drawn inward. This can be a powerful time for reflection, well as bringing in the energies of new beginnings, empowering our intentions for the coming month and beyond. Meditating and journeying within these energies and getting clear about your intentions will be particularly effective at this time as will launching new projects and focussing on what we wish to increase in our lives in the in the days following the New Moon.

The reindeer hides come from herds owned by traditional Sami herders in Northern Sweden, the animals are wild culled by their herders in order to make their traditional living and to maintain the health of their herds. Ros buys the hides through a small family run tannery to support and honour this traditional and ancient way of life, ensuring that all of the animal is used and nothing is wasted. All the skins Ros uses in her drums have been a bi-product of another sustainable purpose (killed for food or due to environmental pressures of overpopulation) and would otherwise be wasted; no animal was ever killed just to provide skin for a drum. Drum making can be seen as a reparation, a way of returning some beauty and honouring to an animal whose life has already been taken.The spirit of the animal lives on and is reborn into the drum.

The Wood for the frames is sourced from sustainably managed forests; and the wood for the song callers is personally gathered by Ros and seasoned every year.
